Lesson Plan

Most of the students know about the main symbols of the USA but not all of them know about it's history. In this classroom activity, students practice speaking and reading while they learn about The Statue of Liberty.

Skill focus:  Improve reading and speaking skills, speaking about the history of the Statue of Liberty using the material from http://www.statueofliberty.org/ 


1.Pre-reading:

Before reading the text, students shoulld answer on this questions:

1. What are the main symbols of the USA?
2. What do you know about the Statue of Liberty?
3. What would you like to know about the Statue of Liberty?

2) Tell students to visit http://www.statueofliberty.org/ site and read the article and try to find the information they want to know about The Statue of Liberty.
 
3) Ask students to find unknown words from the text and write them out. Explain their meaning if it is necessary. 
4) Comprehension
After students have read the article, ask them to answer the following questions:

1. What does the Statue of Liberty symbolize?
2. Where was the Statue of Liberty created? For what purpose?
3. How was the Statue of Liberty transported?
4. What fact amused you?

5) Speaking
Tell student to prepare a 3-minute talk abou the history of The Statue of Liberty.

As a home assigment, students should prepare the presentation about other symbols of the USA. 

Web-based International Project

The   main aim of this project is to teach our future generation to love nature and animals.This project is based on the web-site of one of the most famous animal rights organization  Its slogan is "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment."

1) Tell your students to visit animal rights organization site and search it. 

2) Tell your students to create their own web-blog where they should write their comments. 

3).On this animal rights organization   site students should find the information about PETA

• What is the mission statement of PETA?
• What are PETA's major accomplishments for animals?
• Who are the people behind PETA and the PETA foundation? 
• What other similar organizations do you know?

4)  Tell your students to find any information about Russian animal rights organizations Then each student should present the information he has learned to their classmates.

5)  In their final presentations students have to explain the difference between PETA and Russian organizations and find out what do they all have in common. Think about the global results of such organizations.
